From tobacco field to graveyard, from marching ground to Manhattan’s finest neighborhood, Washington Square has continuously evolved. Site of America’s first labor riot, birthplace of Henry James, home to the College of the City of New York (now NYU) – the square conceals history behind every door. We’ll show you the church where President James Tyler eloped with his bride; the Hanging Elm used for public executions, and the site of history’s first photograph of the human face. You’ll listen to a live, on-site account of the terrible Triangle Fire of 1911 which took the lives 146 people and changed labor and fire-safety laws forever. You’ll see for yourself how the Square has evolved architecturally over the years. |
