Lower Manhattan - The Birth of a Nation

Famous for finance and glitter, New York is seldom recognized for its historical importance. But the square mile that encompasses lower Manhattan below Wall Street is the most historic ground in America.

Founded in 1615 as the Dutch trading colony of New Amsterdam, New York is the oldest city in the country and by far the most important in shaping the nation’s history.

40 million immigrants reached America through Lower Manhattan. George Washington's inauguration, America’s first capital, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, James Madison - all within earshot of lower Broadway.

Certainly, it was built from here, fueled by the greatest capital expansion in the history of man. The American project in the 19th century took on global proportions. Foreign investment poured through Wall Street to fund America’s endeavors:

Our tour will show you what it looked like back then, when the Statue of the English Kind George III still stood in Bowling Green Park; when Battery in Battery Park was a theatre on an island 100 yards from shore. And much more: the house of Captain Kidd, the original New York Stock Exchange, JP Morgan’s old office where a 1920 bombing left divots in the wall.

"I thought I knew a little about downtown after living here for 6 years, but this tour really shows you a lot. It was also gives you the little stories and an anecdotes you wouldn't get from a history book. "
