The greatest park in the World was no accident. In fact, it was probably the greatest act of landscaping in the history. More gunpowder was used to excavate it than in the entire battle of Gettysburg. 270,000 trees and shrubs were planted and 6 million bricks were laid by 20,000 workers over the course of 10 years. The total cost of $10 million was more than 3 times the city’s annual budget in 1860.
Our tour reveals all kinds of unexpected gems. Did you know that the lower end of the Park was once called Pigtown for the shanties built upon its rocky hills? Or that Tavern on the Green, now America’s highest grossing restaurant, was once a sheep barn? Or that designer Donna Karan’s dog was attacked and killed by a swan in the Lake?
Horace Greeley, the famous Editor of the New York Tribune, came up to look at the park in 1859 to see how it was progressing. He remarked: "they have left it alone better than I thought they would." But of course, nothing could have farther than the truth. Our tour will show you what it looked like before Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux transformed it.
Central Park is the ideal tour, combining a beautiful walk with incredibly rich history. Whether you’re a lifelong New Yorker or a first-time visitor, it’s an unforgettable experience.
