Pierre Toussaint
Pierre Toussaint had also been a slave in Haiti . When the rebellion broke out, he was brought here by his owners - the Bernard family. With the clothes on their backs, they all fled in a small boat, arriving in New York a few weeks later. Monsieur Bernard died from wounds suffered in the Rebellion, leaving his children and wife penniless and lost. . . (cont.)

St. Patrick's Old Cathedral & the Irish Brigade
One of New York's Irish regiments - Fighting 69th - heading off to war in 1861. At rear right is St. Patrick's Cathedral, the oldest catholic church in New York. Irish immigrants of the day were exposed to extreme prejudices; yet when their new country called, they answered. Of 7,000 who enlisted in the 69th during the Civil War, only 1,000 returned. . .
