Northern Dispensary

Northern Dispensary - 1885

The Northern Dispensary, on the corner of Waverly and Christo-pher Streets, was built in 1831 as a low cost clinic affiliated with New York Hospital.

Edgar Allen Poe was treated here for head-cold in 1837 - back when he penniless and unknown.

This photograph, taken from the site of Sheridan Square, provides a great view of the old neighbor-hood back then.

All of Greenwich Village was populated with 2-3 story, single family homes like these.
